Choking in adults
Encouraged the victim to cough?
As cough became ineffective gave up to 5 back blows with below technique?
Ensured an ambulance had been called?
- Stood to the side and slightly behind the victim
- Support the chest with one hand and lean the victim forwards
- Gave a sharp blow between the shoulder blades with the heel of my other hand
Checked for dislodgement of the foreign body?
As still choking repeated the back blow up to 5 times?
As back blows were ineffective gave up to 5 abdominal thrusts with below technique?
- Stood behind the patient and put both arms around the upper part of the abdomen
- Leaned the victim forwards
- Clenched my fist and placed it between the umbilicus and the ribcage
- Grasped this hand with my other hand and pulled sharply inwards and upwards
Check for dislodgement?
Repeated up to five times?
As obstruction was not relieved, continued alternating five back blows with five abdominal thrusts?
As the patient became unresponsive, started CPR?
Had someone updated the ambulance service?
