Chronic kidney disease (CKD) - General Patient Information


If confirmed diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) please see below self-management advice:


Smoking:

Stop smoking if appropriate.


Alcohol:

Drink alcohol in moderation.


Weight:

Maintain a healthy body weight.


Diet:

Eat a healthy diet.

Use protein supplements with caution.


Exercise:

Take regular exercise.


Medications:

Avoid the use of over-the-counter non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) where possible.

Avoid herbal remedies.


Risk of acute kidney injury (AKI):

If you have chronic kidney disease you have an increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) if severe, intercurrent illness.
